What is the frequency of performing the Adams Test?

We've already discussed the importance of early detection in patients with scoliosis, but it doesn't hurt to emphasize this point again. This is because when the deformity is discovered early, there is a much greater chance of treatment and, consequently, successful outcomes.

What is the Adams Test?

The Adams Test, also known as the scoliosis screening test, is a very simple physical assessment conducted to detect possible deviations in the spine, specifically scoliosis. This test is often performed on children and adolescents during their growth years, as the condition is more common in this age group.

How to Perform the Adams Test?

In this post, I explain more about how to perform the test. It's very simple and can be done at home by parents or guardians.

What is the frequency of the Adams Test?

The importance of performing the Adams Test annually lies in the fact that scoliosis, if not treated early, can progress and lead to serious complications such as chronic pain, physical deformities, and compromised respiratory function. When scoliosis is detected in its early stages, there are more treatment options available, such as specialized physiotherapy, the use of orthopedic braces, or, in more severe cases, surgery. Therefore, the ideal frequency is for the test to be done every year until the adolescent stops growing.

Additionally, since scoliosis often develops during rapid growth years, it is important to regularly monitor the spine during this period to detect any deviation early on. The Adams Test is a simple and quick way to identify possible spine problems that may require further monitoring by a specialized doctor.

Therefore, performing the Adams Test annually is crucial to ensure that any spinal deviation is identified and treated early, helping to prevent future complications and ensuring a better quality of life for patients.

What is the ideal age to start testing in my children?

The Adams Test typically begins to be performed on school-aged children, around 10 years old. This is an age when scoliosis may start to develop, and it is most effective to intervene early if detected.

However, it is important to note that the exact age to start testing may vary depending on individual factors, family medical history, and specific recommendations from healthcare professionals. Some doctors may choose to start screening a little earlier if there are additional risk factors present.

Regardless of the specific starting age, the Adams Test must be performed regularly, preferably annually during the child's growth years and adolescence, to ensure early detection of any spinal deviation and allow for timely interventions if necessary.

How about you, are you already doing the test there?
